Of Cabbages and Kings...

Or perhaps not... but maybe a soup would do!

soup 3

This is one of our all time favorite soups and granted I usually hold off on my soup making until cooler weather settles in and a piping hot hearty soup is a welcome substance needed to warm the soul. But... I got a hankerin' that just wouldn't quit so I relented, not that it was that hard to give into because as I said... it is one of our all time favorite soups!

Pork and Cabbage Soup

And if you haven't guessed it yet, I am about to share my recipe!

2 lbs boneless country-style pork ribs
6 carrots, peeled
3 celery stalks
1 large onion
1 medium potato, peeled
1 medium sweet potato, peeled
1 medium cabbage

All of the above will be sliced or diced, chunky or not, however you prefer your soup.

soup 2

You will also need two quart jars of your very own home canned tomatoes Ü... but... if you don't have two jars handy you can always use a 28 ounce can of crushed tomatoes, juice and all.

Now comes the flavoring...

soup 1

1/4 cup of brown sugar
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper .
1/2 teaspoon pepper
(or you can use Hot Shot which is both red and black pepper)
6 teaspoons of chicken bouillon
1/2 teaspoon salt
6 cups of water

All of this will go into a good size pot. I use my jumbo pot just because I like to leave room for improvision... Ü  and you also may have to add a bit more water depending on the size of the veggies that were used.

soup 4

Cover the pot and bring it to a boil then reduce the heat to a medium/low setting and simmer for about an hour.

I suggest serving with some type of crusty bread or biscuits. Yummy!

soup 3

Oh, and it has been brought to my attention that if you are feeding children you may want to cut back on the hot pepper spices. Ü

Enjoy!

I have run out of spare time...

And patience!!
I have been trying in my spare time... (ba-hahahahahaha! more like wasting my spare time) to put together a slide show that I can write my comments into each picture.
Now I do know there are programs out there that do it as I have downloaded one that I like but to get it without advertising I would have to pay and of course they don't tell you these things until the very end when your project is finished and you go to share it and you get the... "Oh, by the way... the template YOU have chosen does not come with the options You want BUT for only $$$$ you can have it ALL! Isn't that nice of them?
That has happened to me with other things also. The description is always great but then I have to download *something* and there it is... with all the bells and whistles but then they nail you with the price tag at the end. Ahhh... when will I learn?
So anyway, I will continue my quest of a fantastic do-all-that-I-want FREE programs but for now here is a slideshow on Flickr of my very first REAL riding lesson!
I was sooo happy (and you will see me smiling).
I also want to thank Tessy for being my photographer for the day as Mike (The Farmer of the DELLs) did not know how to take a picture with my camera?
Our conversation went something like this. Now, mind you, at this point I was already in the saddle ready to ride.
Mike- "How do you do it?"
Me- "You just need to push the button"
Mike- "This button right here?"
Me- "Yes, that button"
Mike... "It's not working."

That is when Tessy stepped in...  Thanks Tessy!
But I do believe next time, before I get on my horse, I may be giving a photography lesson... or two! Ü

So anyway, if you want to see the comments that I made you will have to click up in the right hand corner of the slideshow where it says show info... and I will continue my quest for the perfect and free (and it has to be easy!) slideshow maker and video editor... either that or I may just fork over the moola and forget all this frustrating nonsense!

But if anyone has any suggestions feel free to let me know!

AND... it has been brought to my attention that the comments box for blogger is a bit confusing, and I agree it can be. So I am going to leave instructions at the bottoms of my posts for those (and you know who you are) who have difficulties leaving comments. Ü
So... go ahead and type in the comment box what you want to say, and then underneath that where it says "comment as" there is a drop down menu.
When you click it it gives you the option to "select a profile".
Now if you do not have a profile with any of the things listed there you can still comment, just go to the bottom where it says "Name/URL" or "Anonymous".
If you click on "Name/URL" you do not have to have a URL to leave your name!
Just fill in your name and hit continue and your name will appear in the "comment as" box and then hit the "post comment" button and you are done!
Or you could do it anonymously!
I think the reason they want to use an existing profile is that then your name would be remembered in the "post as" drop down menu. Maybe?

Father and Son

My nephew, Micthell, is in the process of working towards the requirements needed so that in the future he will be able to take custody of Malachi which is a cool thing for him to do!
But in the mean time... Malachi will still be my boy Ü but I have been known on occasion to share ... cause I'm kinda cool like that too.
Here are just a couple of photos that I recently at my mother-in-laws pool

Dianthus barbatus

Otherwise known as Sweet William!

In October of 2007, we were in the process of buying our new house with plans to sell our old house and at that time I had to make a do or die determination. With winter and frozen ground right around the corner, I had to make a choice, either I could risk losing my perienials that I had at our old house to the new owner should our house sell by spring or I could dig them out now and bring them to this house that we had not purchased yet!
So, in an act of faith, I chose to dig! I asked the current owner if it would be alright and told her that if for whatever reason we did not buy the house that the plants would be hers as I would not be able take them back.
So Mike rototilled a temporary holding plot in the front lawn by the rock wall as I just needed to quickly get them in the ground.

This was on October 30th, 2007 and I might add that this event was the official start of farmerhood!

001

In the next few weeks, I dug and transplanted as many plants as I could before it got too cold... well, that is I, my little farmer and his little shovel did. Ü

002

These were the first to be brought over. They are my prized peonies that were brought from my mothers house in Idaho.  I couldn't bear to leave them behind!
But I also brought over a whole lot more than these, especially when someone mentioned to me that perhaps the new owner who would buy our house would not like flower gardens and would... (said in a sinister voice) Mow 'em Down, and Till 'em Under... and ... Plant Grass! HEH-Heh-Heh heeeeeh!
*cringe* What a horrid thought! So I dug and re-dug until I just could not dig anymore!

Then I waited for spring. I had no idea whether any of the plants would even survive the move because it had been done so late in the year but boy, was I happy to see these growing!

Can't you just... ~sniff-sniffle-snu-u-u-uff~ smell them?

So with springs arrival, I got the gardening itch, and I found myself dealing with a huge blank canvas that had a whole lot more room for gardening than the postage stamp property that my old house provided me. So, I went out and purchased a package of wildflower seed and 'threw it down' in the same plot that had been dug in the fall. I figured that it would be a fast and easy filler garden and at least be good competition for the weeds that would inevitably be growing in the new turned up earth.

Now, I don't know if any of you have 'thrown down' wildflower seed before but I think the one I got was mostly made up of cosmos which seem to grow very well in this neck of the woods, so well in fact that I was able to grow a cosmo forest!

005

My peonies are in there... somewhere.

Cosmos also reseed very easily. So since that first year I have only let a few grow back and even then they tend to get floppy. But hey... they grow for free so I can't complain too much.

There were other seeds in that mix that also grew... calendula, poppies, wallflowers, lupines, and batchelors buttons and also sweet william, and it is the latter that has just this year knocked my socks off!

Last year, I hardly remember seeing them... but this year... there is no mistaking their presence!

I am so surprised by the multitude of colors and the magnitude of blossoms! Amazing how I didn't even know they were there silently growing waiting to bless me with their abundant beauty. And blessed I have been!
And the amount of butterflies that have been attracted to my garden because of them is fantastic... I am always seeing them flitting through.
The ones that are seen in my photos are Spotted Red Admiral , Spice Bush Swallowtail and the Tiger Swallowtail.

It is rather unbelievable, that in just two summers the front yard has gone from this -

to this -

And all it took was a few transplanted perenials a packet of wildflower seeds and the Lord who gives the increase.

Well, perhaps one day, if your ever in the nieghborhood and you have a few minutes to spare, stop in for a visit and we can sip a cold glass of mint tea... and take stroll amongst the sweet williams...

Ü

Have a blessed day!
